About Samosir.com

An independent guide to Samosir and Lake Toba, for people who want more than a photo stop.

Samosir.com exists to help you get the most out of Lake Toba — not just what to see, but how to make the long journey from Medan painless, which tours are worth it, where to sleep, how to behave in a Batak village and how to reach the viewpoints and hot springs on the far side of the island.

Independent, not official. This site is not run by, endorsed by or affiliated with the Government of Indonesia, the Samosir Regency administration, the Lake Toba tourism authority or any tourism board. It is a privately published travel guide.

What we cover

  • How to get from Medan or Silangit to Parapat, across the lake by boat or ferry, and around the island by scooter, car and minibus.
  • Which tours are worth booking, ranked honestly and updated as ratings change.
  • What to see — Tuk Tuk, the royal tombs of Tomok, the stone chairs of Ambarita, the museum at Simanindo, the hot springs and more.
  • The lake beyond Samosir: Bukit Holbung, Sipiso-piso waterfall, Parapat, Balige, Berastagi and Medan.
  • Batak culture and etiquette, where to stay, area by area, and when to come.

How we research

Prices, opening days and journey times are checked against operators, transport providers and booking platforms, and reviewed regularly. Tour ratings and review counts come directly from GetYourGuide; hotel scores from Trip.com. Where a figure moves around — fares, entrance fees, boat times — we give a range and say so, rather than pretending to a precision that does not exist.

Where we express an opinion, it is an opinion. We tell you when a trip is strenuous, when a cheaper option is the better one, and when a product has too few reviews to judge.

How the site is funded

We are a GetYourGuide affiliate partner and a Trip.com partner. If you book a tour or a room through a link on this site, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. That is the only way this guide is funded — there is no advertising, no sponsored placements and no paid inclusion in any ranking. Read the full affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

Prices change, rules change, opening hours shift. If something here is out of date or wrong, please tell us — we would rather fix it than defend it. Write to us on the contact page.
