Lake Toba & Samosir Tours

Every relevant bookable trip to the lake and the island — compared, priced and reservable in a couple of taps.

Lake Toba is easy to enjoy and tiresome to reach. The road from Medan takes four to five hours, public buses drop you at a chaotic junction, the two ferry harbours confuse almost everybody, and the best viewpoints are scattered around a lake a hundred kilometres long. A tour with a car, a driver and a guide solves most of that in one booking.

Everything here is booked through GetYourGuide, which means live availability, free cancellation on most options and reserve-now-pay-later on many. Prices are indicative “from” amounts in euros and change with the season and exchange rate — tap any card for the live price in your own currency.

An honest note on choice: GetYourGuide lists almost nothing that starts on Samosir itself. Its Lake Toba inventory is mainly day trips and multi-day packages from Medan, a couple of boat trips on the lake, and experiences in the gateway towns of Medan, Berastagi and Bukit Lawang. Several are new and have few or no reviews. We list everything relevant, say plainly where reviews are thin, and explain how to visit each place on your own on our things to do pages.

Booking questions

Frequently asked questions

Which tour is best for a first visit?

If you have the time, the three-day tour from Medan with Samosir Island: it includes the transport, the crossing and a full day among the Batak villages. If you only have one day, choose the day trip with the ferry and lunch, which actually reaches the island.

Do tours include hotel pickup in Medan?

Most list pickup from Medan hotels, and many will also collect from Kualanamu airport by arrangement. Check the “meeting point” section before booking and tell the operator your flight time.

Can I book a tour that starts on Samosir?

Only one at the moment: the Batu Gantung boat tour. For scooter days, village visits and hikes on the island, arrange things through your guesthouse in Tuk Tuk — our things to do pages explain how.

Can I cancel if my plans change?

Most experiences on GetYourGuide can be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the start; multi-day packages sometimes have longer notice periods. The exact terms are shown on each product page before you pay.

Is a one-way tour possible — Medan to the lake, without coming back?

Some operators will drop you in Parapat or on Samosir at the end of a tour instead of returning you to Medan. It is not a standard option, so message the operator through GetYourGuide before booking.
