Lakeside cottages with Batak-style roofs among gardens on the shore of Samosir

Where to Stay on Samosir & Lake Toba

Tuk Tuk for the lake, Parapat for the boat, Medan for the flight — and how to choose between them.

Where you sleep shapes a Lake Toba trip more than usual, because of the boat. Stay on Samosir and you wake to the lake at your door; stay in Parapat and you are well placed for transport but on the wrong side of the water. Most travellers want at least two nights on the island, with a night on the mainland at one end only if their flight times demand it.

Below are real properties in four areas, with star ratings, guest scores and indicative “from” rates as shown by Trip.com when we checked. Rates swing with dates — especially around Christmas, New Year and Lebaran — so follow the links for live prices. Many small Tuk Tuk guesthouses are family businesses that are not listed on every booking site; the list links at the end of each section show what is available for your dates.

Tomok & north Samosir Quiet, space, travellers with their own vehicle Walking to restaurants; evenings out Budget to upper mid-range
Parapat Catching the first boat or an early bus; larger hotels with views Charm; swimming from the door Budget to mid-range
Medan / Kualanamu Flights, city food, international-standard hotels Anything to do with the lake — it is four to five hours away Very good value at every level

Booking tips

  • Send your arrival time. Tell your Tuk Tuk guesthouse which boat you expect to be on; many will look out for you at the jetty.
  • Ask about hot water. Evenings are cool. Budget rooms do not always have hot showers — check if it matters to you.
  • Lake view or garden? Lakefront rooms cost more and are worth it; rooms at the back can be noticeably cheaper.
  • Weekends and holidays: Saturday nights fill with visitors from Medan and often come with late music. For quiet, stay midweek or choose a smaller place away from the big complexes.
  • Before a flight: leave the island the day before and sleep in Medan or by the airport. The road is too unpredictable for same-day connections.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in Tuk Tuk or Parapat?

Tuk Tuk, unless your timings force a night in Parapat. Samosir is the reason to come, and waking up on the island saves you a boat ride each day.

How much does accommodation cost on Samosir?

Simple lakeside rooms start at around US$15–30 a night, comfortable mid-range resorts at roughly US$30–60, and the one five-star in Tuk Tuk from about US$90. Prices rise sharply at Christmas, New Year and Lebaran.

Do I need to book ahead?

For holiday periods and July–August, yes. At other times you can usually find a room on arrival, though the best-reviewed small places fill first.

Are there hotels near Kualanamu airport?

Yes. There are several within a few minutes of the terminal — we list one above — which are far more convenient than central Medan for early flights.

Can I stay near the hot springs or Bukit Holbung?

There are simple hotels in Pangururan, about an hour and a quarter from Tuk Tuk, which make an early start for the western sights much easier.
