The southern arm of Lake Toba seen from the Huta Ginjang viewpoint

Balige & Silangit

The southern shore, a Batak museum and the nearest airport

Balige, capital of Toba Regency, is the principal town on the southern shore of the lake. It is known for the row of market halls with soaring Batak-style roofs in its centre, for its lakeside food — this is the home of mie gomak and naniura — and for the T.B. Silalahi Center, whose Batak Museum is the most modern introduction to the cultures of all the Batak groups.

Up on the plateau above town, Silangit International Airport is the closest airport to Lake Toba. Flying here instead of Medan cuts the road journey to the lake by half or more, although flights are far fewer. Between airport and shore, the Huta Ginjang viewpoint gives the classic panorama of the southern lake.

Top things to do at Balige & Silangit

Visit the Batak Museum

The museum at the T.B. Silalahi Center sets out the history, scripts, textiles, weapons and houses of the Toba, Karo, Simalungun, Pakpak, Angkola and Mandailing Batak in a contemporary building overlooking the lake, with a reconstructed village in the grounds. Allow an hour and a half.

Eat at Balige market

The market halls, built in the colonial period with carved and painted Batak gables, are still the town’s commercial heart. Stalls nearby serve mie gomak — thick noodles in a spiced, andaliman-scented sauce — for breakfast.

Stand on Huta Ginjang

A viewpoint on the rim near the airport, around 1,500 metres above sea level, looking over the bay of Muara and the island of Sibandang. It is also the region’s paragliding launch site.

Pay respects to Sisingamangaraja XII

The last of the Batak priest-kings, who led resistance to Dutch rule until he was killed in 1907, is a national hero of Indonesia. His memorial tomb stands in Soposurung on the edge of Balige.

Balige & Silangit FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Silangit or Medan the better airport for Lake Toba?

Silangit is much closer — about two hours from Parapat instead of four to five — but has few flights. Medan’s Kualanamu airport has far more connections, including international ones. Our getting there guide compares them.

Can I get from Balige to Samosir directly?

Most travellers go via Parapat or Ajibata. Local boats do cross from the south shore, but services are irregular; ask at the harbour.

Is Balige worth a stop?

For the museum and the food, yes — it fits neatly into the transfer between Silangit and Parapat.
